Make a Decorative Box - Make a Decorative Photo Box
Learn Crafts Online is dedicated to bringing easy and fun paper crafts to you! Do you have your photos in photo boxes currently? Why not use your photo boxes as a decorative box in your home decor? It is very fun to make a decorative box and you can use your creativity to decorate the photo box anyway you desire. Here are a few ideas that we came up with to make a decorative photo box. Keep in mind, once you learn the techniques you can make any decorative box.
Make a Tissue-Paper Decorative Box: this is an easy and inexpensive way to make a decorative box.
Supply List:
- Boxes in a solid color (we used photo boxes, but any box would do)
- Tissue Paper in a variety of colors and /or patterns
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Plastic sheeting or garbage bag (to protect your workspace)
- Decoupage medium - you can find this at craft stores.
- Small brush
Let's get started:
- Cut tissue paper into strips of different widths. Quick tip: use a rotary cutter to cut multiple strips at once.
- Prepare your work surface with plastic (decoupage can be messy).
- Paint decoupage medium on the top of your box lid (and down the sides and into the interior of the lid). Carefully place a strip of tissue paper on the decoupaged area. (We started with the width first.) Use your brush to smooth the strip as you work. Be sure to fold each strip over the side and into the interior of the box as you work to give a nice finished edge.
- When you're finished decoupaging your tissue paper strips width-wise, you can repeat the process running lengthwise. Continue to use your brush to smooth the strips.
- At this point, you can start to decorate the base of the box (if you would like to) - using the same decoupage/tissue paper procedure as above. We left the bottom of our box in it's solid color. It looks great!
- Final step - give the lid (and box base) a final coat of decoupage medium and let it dry.
Other variations to use to make a decorative box:
- Use ribbon instead of the tissue paper - very elegant look for a decorative box. We'd recommend using a thinned-down white glue to create a ribbon box.
- Use dried flowers or silk flower petals on your box lid. Use a hot glue gun to adhere your flowers or petals.
- Find pictures in magazines, old catalogs and carefully cut them out to decoupage on a box.
- Use colorful wrapping paper to wrap your box lid and box base.
Making decorative boxes is a fun, creative activity. Use your creativity and before you know it, you'll never have a plain box in your house again!
